Aspiring guitar players often ask me for some tips on getting started.  The lessons below demonstrate "The Blues Scale" in all five positions.  The Blues Scale is based on the Minor Pentatonic Scale but adds the flatted 5th - the blue note.   The Pentatonic and The Blues Scale are much of what you hear in blues and rock.   There is often a lot more going on - but these scales are the foundation.  Practice these chromatically up and down the neck.  You have to know them instinctively.
